A player’s first minute should answer three questions: what can I do, what happens when I do it, and why would I try again? These answers are easiest to understand through play.
Start with a single action. Let the player see its result before introducing another mechanic. A small, readable response helps connect the input to the outcome.
Test the opening with someone who has never seen the game. Watch without explaining. The moments where they hesitate are useful clues about controls, visual hierarchy and feedback.
This is a design principle we want to bring into our games: give curiosity room, make feedback clear and introduce complexity at a pace the player can follow.
